I think that we should be drafted, but only for two years. Because it would provide special skills that if some random country starts to invade the US that the civilians that had time to train can take them on them selves.

A draft indicates only some will be serving like a lottery. We simply need mandatory service beginning after high school through the age of 50. You serve 2 years active duty followed by reserve duty until 50 years of age. The benefits would be a free college education, free housing for life and free medical care for life. This would not cost the tax payers anything because it would be true service given freely. Everything would be provided by the military. Service would be without pay. This would benefit our nation in so many ways. If we all had some skin in the game and our ass on the line, do you really think we would be quick to go to war? Do you think any nation would dare think of going to war with a 100 million man and women armed force? Everybody needs to experience the fear of potentially losing their life as a sacrifice for our nation.

You people on here that think a draft would be good. I watched a Ken Burns show on Vietnam. When Nixon opened the draft to everyone in America this is what happened. Sergeants would say we are going down into that valley and clear out the Vietcong. The men said to the Sergeant no we ain't going into that valley. Let that be a lesson to you people. Just look at the young people in America and tell me that won't happen. When it does, what are you going to do to them? Shoot them? The liberal news would have a field day with that. Besides you can only draft men. With todays youth they don't know what they are to begin with, so how are you going to figure that one out? What you have to do is get men to want to fight for this country and that ain't going to happen because the elites sold them out for cheap bobbles from China. So what are you going to do with the young people that don't want to fight for the rich riches?

Well the start is misleading. USA had draft in it's first underpinnings. Militia Acts of 1792 demanded every able adult male to maintain a personal firearm to be put in the use of the national defense should need arise. It was in essence conscription. Not even inactive, but one with ongoing active obligation. Maintain the weapon, show up in inspection when ever asked and when asked come in for training. It just wasn't a standing conscript army. Which at the time was RARE. Most conscript armies were of cadre form. Cadre of professional full time officers and then militia of conscripts to be mobilized as needed. So USA has had draft since 1700's and still has it. It was again just suspended in active form due to having no need and politics.

Also problem with say Afghanistan and conscripts, isn't the conscripts. It is that USA is in a war in afghanistan. Conscription is pretty good gauge of legitimazy of war. "If you can't run this war with conscripts, Should you be fighting it." Conscripts are horrible in offensive wars like Vietnam, Afghanistan or Iraq. That isn't problem of conscription, but of offensive wars.

Many a national defense force runs extremely efficient defensive conscription military with zero trouble…….. Because they aren't planning to go on offensive war. Thus they have no morale or legitimacy problem. Conscripts know only time they would be activated is as Friedman put "dire emergency". So problem isn't the conscripts. It is the incompatible foreign policy.

Then again if one wants to run intervening empire… Well then volunteer professionals are the way the go. Nobody cares, if they got send to pointless war for bad reasons. Heck most of the professional might embrace it, since that would probably entail combat bonuses and career climbing. Which is kinda problem of professional military for overall peace. Professional military wants to fight.

Conscription military sees war as measure of last resort necessary evil, a burden. Thus leading to far less hawkish policy.

Because be as the Greenspan and Friedman say…. in democracy one can't just "call up 50k troops" and go to war. Not in modern times. In feudal times of kings… sure. But not in modern democracy. There is nothing more conscript nations politicians fear more than concerned mothers brigade. It can topple governments. Thus you don't just mobilize 50k troops. Unless there is dire emergency, that is a political suicide. So one better have dire and darn good reason for that mobilization… or the soldiers parents will shred the political leadership to pieces.

The Iraq War could not have been fought had the draft existed. The people would not have supported it. I think we need a draft to keep the political leaders honest.
