Air Force Report: Veterinary Technician

SENIOR AIRMAN STEPHEN ELLIS
CHELSIE THOMPSON IS ONE OF TWO VETERINARY TECHNICIANS AT OSAN AIR BASE.
CHELSIE THOMPSON SO I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN IN A MEDICAL FIELD.
I GREW UP IN A FAMILY FULL OF MEDICINE, YOU KNOW, IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER, AND MEDICINE
HAS ALWAYS REALLY INTERESTED ME. WHEN I WAS ABLE TO GO THROUGH SCHOOL, I STARTED OUT AS
A C-N-A, AN E-M-T, AND WHEN WE GOT HERE, I WAS EVEN VOLUNTEERING AT THE FIFTY FIRST FOR
A LITTLE WHILE, AND THE JOB BECAME AVAILABLE FOR A VETERINARY TECHNICIAN. AND MEDICINE
IS MEDICINE NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO, SO IT WORKED OUT REALLY WELL THAT I WAS ABLE TO
USE MY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE FROM HUMAN MEDICINE AND INCORPORATE IT INTO ANIMAL MEDICINE TOO.
SENIOR AIRMAN STEPHEN ELLIS BUT CHELSIE’S FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB IS
SURGERIES, SUCH AS THAT OF DUKE, THE 126 POUND ROTTWEILER.
CHELSIE THOMPSON SO TODAY, WE ARE DOING A NEUTER ON A DOG,
AND IT’S A DIFFERENT TYPE OF NEUTER. IT’S CALLED A SCROTAL ABLASION WHERE WE REMOVE
EVERYTHING. AND BECAUSE THE DOG HAS HAD AN ENLARGED PROSTRATE, WE WANT TO REMOVE ALL
OF HIS MAN PARTS SO HOPEFULLY THE INFLAMMATION WILL GO DOWN AND LIKELY CURE THE PROBLEM.
SENIOR AIRMAN STEPHEN ELLIS AS COLD AND CLINICAL AS THAT SOUNDS, THE OSAN
VETERINARY CLINIC IS FULL OF WARM HEARTS. CHELSIE THOMPSON
YOU KNOW, EVERYBODY THAT WORKS HERE HAS ANIMALS. EVERYBODY THAT IS INVOLVED IN THE VETERINARY
MEDICINE IN THIS BUILDING HAS ANIMALS, AND CARES FOR ANIMALS JUST AS THEY WOULD FOR THEIR
OWN, YOU KNOW, CARES FOR OTHER PEOPLES’ ANIMALS JUST AS THEY WOULD FOR THEIR OWN.
AND I THINK THAT’S A GOOD POINT TO TOUCH ON FOR THE COMMUNITY, THAT NO MATTER WHAT’S
GOING ON, WE’RE ALWAYS MAKING SURE THAT YOUR ANIMAL IS TAKEN CARE OF JUST AS WELL
AS OUR OWN ANIMAL WOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF. SENIOR AIRMAN STEPHEN ELLIS
BEING TAKEN CARE OF JUST like DUKE. AFTER THE ANESTHESIA WEARS OFF, HE’LL BE WALKING
AROUND AND BACK TO HIS OLD SELF IN NO TIME. SENIOR AIRMAN STEPHEN ELLIS, OSAN AIR BASE,
KOREA.
