HEY THERE EVERYONE, I’M
STAFF SERGEANT TRACI KELLER WITH YOUR LOOK
AROUND THE AIR FORCE. CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT
OF THE AIR FORCE KALETH WRIGHT TESTIFIED BEFORE
THE HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS SUBCOMMITTEE ON MILITARY
CONSTRUCTION AND VETERANS AFFAIRS AND RELATED
AGENCIES LAST WEEK REGARDING THE AIR FORCE’S
QUALITY OF LIFE. CHIEF WRIGHT TESTIFIED ABOUT THE
IMPORTANCE OF COMPENSATION AND THE NEED TO
INCREASE THE FORCE. “PART OF THE FISCAL YEAR
2017 NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT
CONSIDERS POTENTIAL CHANGES TO OUR AIRMEN’S
COMPENSATION, SPECIFICALLY IN THE FORM OF BASIC
ALLOWANCE FOR HOUSING. THE REGRESSIVE NATURE OF THE
PROPOSED LEGISLATION EFFECTIVELY REMOVES BAH AS
A PART OF REGULAR MILITARY COMPENSATION WHICH COULD
SEVERELY LIMIT OUR ABILITIES TO RECRUIT AND
RETAIN OUR AIRMEN. THIS WILL REVERSE NEARLY TWENTY
YEARS OF DELIBERATE LEGISLATIVE ACTION TO
ENSURE SERVICEMEMBERS ARE APPROPRIATELY COMPENSATED
FOR THEIR SERVICE AND THAT THEIR SALARIES REMAIN
COMPETITIVE WITH PRIVATE SECTOR PROFESSIONALS. CHIEF WRIGHT ALSO
TESTIFIED THAT IN ORDER TO MEET GLOBAL DEMANDS,
RESOURCE EMERGING REQUIREMENTS, AND REPAIR
AND SUSTAIN THE FORCE, THE AIR FORCE MUST INCREASE
ITS ACTIVE DUTY END STRENGTH UP TO 321,000 BY
THE END THE YEAR. IN A RECENT INTERVIEW CHIEF
WRIGHT SHARED HOW HE WANTS TO LEAD AIRMEN. “[I’M HERE TO SERVE THEM.
RIGHT. SO JUST AS GENERAL GOLDFEIN TALKS ABOUT THE
LEADERSHIP PYRAMID BEING TURNED UPSIDE DOWN. I’M
HERE, THEY’RE THERE. AND] I’M HERE TO FIRST AND
FOREMOST FIGURE OUT WHAT THEY NEED, WHAT MOTIVATES
THEM. WHAT DRIVES THEM, WHAT–HOW CAN I CREATE
AN ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL ALLOW ALL OF THEM TO BE
SUCCESSFUL. AND THAT AND THAT’S
SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR EVERY AIRMAN, SOMETHING
DIFFERENT FOR EVERY COMMAND, EVERY
ORGANIZATION, SO THIS IS HARD WORK BUT THE BOTTOM
LINE, THE ONE THING I WANT AIRMEN TO KNOW IS
I’M HERE TO SERVE. AND THAT’S YOUR LOOK
AROUND THE AIR FORCE.
