Around the Air Force: SECAF Budget Testimony / Humanitarian Delivery / MAFFS

HEY THERE EVERYONE, I’M
AIRMAN FIRST CLASS ANGELO ROSARIO WITH YOUR LOOK
AROUND THE AIR FORCE. SECRETARY OF THE AIR FORCE
HEATHER WILSON SPOKE AT A SENATE ARMED SERVICES
COMMITTEE HEARING TO TESTIFY ON BEHALF
OF THE AIR FORCE. AND THE FISCAL YEAR 19
PROPOSAL, WITH THE BUDGET CERTAINTY THAT THE
CONGRESS HAS GIVEN US, WILL HELP US TO RESTORE
THE READINESS OF THE FORCE. AND I WANTED TO THANK YOU
PUBLICLY FOR THAT EFFORT. WE NEED THAT CERTAINTY,
AND WE ARE COMMITTED TO USING THE DOLLARS YOU
APPROPRIATE WISELY IN THE DEFENSE OF THE NATION. SECRETARY WILSON ALSO SAID
THE CONTINUING THEME AND EFFORT IS TO KEEP
IMPROVING THE READINESS OF THE FORCE TO WIN
ANY FIGHT, ANY TIME. THE 911TH AIRLIFT WING
ASSIGNED TO THE PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
AIR RESERVE STATION IS CHANGING TO MEET THE
NEEDS OF THE AIR FORCE. THE WING IS CHANGING FROM
THE TACTICAL C-130 TO THE MORE STRATEGIC
C-17 AIRCRAFT. THE AIRLIFT WING WILL
EVENTUALLY HOST EIGHT AIRCRAFT AND ANTICIPATES
HAVING THE FIRST TWO C-17S ON STATION IN
OCTOBER OF THIS YEAR. AIRMEN FROM THE 21ST
AIRLIFT SQUADRON AND THE 860TH AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE
SQUADRON FROM TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, CALIFORNIA
DELIVERED AN AMBULANCE AND FIRE TRUCK TO GUATEMALA
CITY, GUATEMALA ON APRIL 20TH. THE AMBULANCE AND FIRE
TRUCK WERE SHIPPED ON A C-17 GLOBEMASTER THREE,
THANKS TO THE DENTON PROGRAM, WHICH IS A D-O-D
TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM THAT MOVES HUMANITARIAN
CARGO TO DEVELOPING NATIONS TO EASE
HUMAN SUFFERING. WITH WILDFIRE SEASON FAST
APPROACHING, GUARD AND RESERVE AIRMEN FROM 4
DIFFERENT AIRLIFT WINGS MET AT MCCLELLAN RELOAD
BASE IN SACRAMENTO CALIFORNIA TO BEGIN
TRAINING WITH THE MODULAR AIRBORNE FIRE FIGHTING
SYSTEM OR MAFFS. THIS YEARS TRAINING IS
SPONSORED BY THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
AND INCLUDED NATIONAL GUARD AIRMEN FROM
CALIFORNIA, NEVADA, AND WYOMING ALONG WITH RESERVE
AIRMEN FROM COLORADO. THE MAFFS ARE LOADED ONTO
THE BACK OF C-130 HERCULES TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT AND CAN
CARRY UP TO 3000 GALLONS OF WATER OR FIRE RETARDANT
THAT’S DROPPED ONTO THE FIRE. IN THE PAST DECADE,
C-130S EQUIPPED WITH MAFFS DELIVERED MORE THAN 8
MILLION GALLONS OF FIRE RETARDANT TO HELP WITH
WILDFIRE SUPPRESSION. AND THAT’S YOUR LOOK
AROUND THE AIR FORCE.
