Ft. Thomas seeking developer to renovate historic U.S. Army Officer homes

A YARD, BARELY MISSING A TELEPHONE POLE . HISTORIC COLUMNS IN NEED OF A NEW OWNER AND MAJOR RENOVATIONS. WE WENT TO FORT THOMAS TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE AGING HOMES IN NEED OF DEVELOPERS, NOT DEMOLITION. THE HOMES ARE LISTED ON THE REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES. 10 FORMER YOU MUST — 10 FORMER U.S. ARMY OFFICER HOMES SIT EMPTY BUT THE CITY IS HOPING FOR A DRAMATIC CHANGE. DEBBIE BUCKLEY IS THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR. EVERYONE LOVES THESE BUILDINGS. THEY MEAN SOMETHING. ELSE IN THE 1890’S, FIVE OF THE HOMES ARE SINGLE-FAMILY AND FIVE ARE DUPLEXES, ALL IN NEED OF MAJOR RENOVATIONS. WATER AND SEWER INFRASTRUCTURE WILL NEED TO BE BUILT, AS WELL AS HOUSE THERE’S — HAZARDS REMOVED. WE KNOW IT IS A BIG TICKET ITEM. THE GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO REBATE PART OF THE PRICE OF THAT , BUT THAT IS AN OBSTACLE. ONCE COMPLETE, PLENTY OF TREASURES WILL REMAIN FOR THE HOME. THEY HAD DETAILED WOODWORK AND RAILINGS, HARDWOOD LOWERS AND EXQUISITE TITLE. IT IS CALLED KENSINGTON TILE AND MADE ON THE RIVER IN NEWPORT. THE HOUSE MAY HAVE A DIFFERENT LAYOUT BUT ALL VERY SPACIOUS. THE LARGEST AT NEARLY 6000 SQUARE FEET. THE CITY WORKING WITH THE VETERANS AFFAIR TRYING TO FIND A SINGLE DEVELOPER TO BUY ALL OF THE HOMES TO RENOVATE THEM. THEY HAVE BEEN TAKING OPEN BIDS FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS BUT SO FAR NO LUCK. ONCE PURCHASED, IT IS ESTIMATED MILLIONS MORE WILL BE NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE RESTORATION. THE CITY WORKING WITH INTEREST TO DEVELOPERS TO FIND A COMPROMISE THAT WILL MOVE THE PROJECT FORWARD. U.S. ARMY OFFICERS LIVED IN THE HOMES THROUGH THE LATE 1940’S.
