[Music] I didn’t even know we had a state sergeant major and then somebody, I met Sgt. Maj. Wehling for the first time. Yeah
he’s the state sergeant major. I’m like dude, I want to be that dude. It just sounded so cool. I’m like, yeah I want to be, that’s a guy I
want to be. [Music] The number one thing I wanted to effect
in our Ohio Army National Guard was for young noncommissioned officers to
enforce standards in discipline across the force. Because that is what saves
lives in combat. You know, I hate to sound trite but I’ve seen it firsthand. Enforcing eye protection saved several guys in the 125 their eyesight. Enforcing seatbelts and gunners restraint harness saved two Gunners on
my own PSD when they rolled vehicles. So, if we, if young noncommissioned officers —
corporal, sergeant, staff sergeants, are passionate or are enthusiastic about
enforcing standards and discipline, that’s the base of discipline for an
Army. And a disciplined Army can do anything. [Music] We are no longer strategic reserve, we’re
not even an operational reserve, we are part of the operational Army on a daily
basis. Nowadays we are mobilizing soldiers on a daily basis to go to Korea,
Gitmo, you know all around the world, Jordan, Syria Horn of Africa, National
Capital Region. I mean you know we are part of our nation’s operational force
and that is the biggest difference.
