US Army Special Ops vet Tyler Grey shares his Battlemix

As far back as I can think of a song influencing me joining the military, was “Paint It Black
by The Rolling Stones. I’m Tyler Grey, former U.S.
Army special operations veteran. What I like in music in general, is I like honesty, and I like rawness. I joined in the 90’s. A song that I listened to
just over and over again was “Rooster” by Alice In Chains. A song about his dad in the Vietnam War, which a lot of people don’t know that song’s about the Vietnam War. Another one would be “One” by Metallica. All three of those songs
came out before I joined, but they all kind of had somewhat of a level of influence to me joining. So, I was blown up in Sadr City, Iraq, got sent home and spent
couple months in the hospital. Through that process, you know, I would go through surgery,
I’d have to go through rehab. Each time it came with the
cycle of pain medication. Your body makes a choice
that your mind doesn’t. It’s basically addicted to this process. A song that really I identified with, which was “Not Afraid” by Eminem. That song, really that whole album is about overcoming, you know, opiates. That’s the heroes journey. The journey isn’t they
never have a problem. The journey is overcoming problems. The music I like is about people who are honest and open enough to share a problem, to share a weakness, to share an experience that affected them, and how then they overcome it. (upbeat music)
