US Nimitz Class vs Russia’s Admiral Kuznetsov Aircraft Carrier – Military / Navy Comparison

It is imperative for powerful countries to
showcase their strength, and nations often like to flex their military might like bodybuilders
posing in a mirror. And, why not? What would be the point of keeping such strength
a secret? We thought it would be cool to compare the
main aircraft carriers operating in the two most prominent navies of the world; The United
States and Russia. Let’s take a closer look at these giants
of the sea in this episode of The Infographics Show, The United States’ Nimitz Class vs
Russia’s Admiral Kuznetsov. The United States has a total of 10 identical
aircraft carriers that all fall under the designation “Nimitz Class.” The USS Nimitz (CVN 68) was the first of the
crew, deployed in 1975. The Russian aircraft carrier, named Admiral
Kuznetsov, was launched in 1985 and is Russia’s only one. A sister ship for the Russian carrier, named
the Varyag, was in the works, but the hull ended up being sold to China. It currently lives on in China’s navy as
the Liaoning. Talk about playing for another team! Each country’s aircraft carrier was built
for slightly different reasons. The Nimitz class vessels were built primarily
as a home for American aircrafts, while Admiral Kuznetsov was built to be its own offensive
power in Russia’s navy. Due to their slightly different purposes,
a direct comparison should be taken with a tiny grain of salt, but we’re going to pepper
you with some more stats, nonetheless! The armaments for the Nimitz class carriers
include several NATO Sea Sparrow, Phalanx CIWS and Rolling Airframe Missile mounts. Admiral Kuznetsov, on the other hand, is armed
with ASW rocket systems, SA-N-9 “Gauntlet” eight-round vertical SAM launchers, combined
gun/missile systems with twin 30mm Gatling guns, and SA-N-11 “Grison” missiles. The United States Nimitz Class carriers have
a length of about 1,092 feet (333 meters), while The Admiral has a length of about 999
feet (305 meters), making it just a little bit shorter than its American counterpart. The American carriers have a beam of about
134 feet (41 meters), and weigh approximately 97,000 tons. The Russian carrier has a beam of 121 feet
(37 meters) and weighs about 67,000 tons. Basically it’s the reverse of Rocky IV, with
Russia having a Rocky Balboa against the United States’ fleet of Ivan Dragos. The two nations have very different focuses
when it comes to powering their ships. Admiral Kuznetsov is primarily powered by
8 turbo pressurized boilers, 4 turbines, 9 turbogenerators, and 6 diesel generators,
while each Nimitz Class carrier is equipped with and powered by two nuclear reactors and
four shafts located on board. Both the Nimitz Class carriers and the Admiral
have speeds of around 30 knots, or about 34 miles per hour. Admiral Kuznetsov typically carries around
40 aircraft and has a crew of about 2,000. Each of the Nimitz Class carriers has about
60 flying vessels on them and crews upwards of 5,000. While the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier
and the Nimitz class carriers are the current aircraft carrier leaders in their respective
country’s navies, it should be noted that the United States is in the works of replacing
their Nimitz class ships with an improved fleet of Gerald R. Ford class carriers. The United States Navy recently reported that
the first of its class is 98% complete, and it is set to be delivered sometime in 2017. This new class of carriers has many similarities
with the older Nimitz class, but each of the newer carriers will save the United States
$4 billion in total ownership costs during their 50-year service life. To put that in perspective, each ship would
be saving the equivalent of over 83,000 Unites States salaries, based off the average wage
of $48,098.63 for Americans in 2015. That’s quite a lot of cheddar, or in this
case, Cap’n Crunch might be more appropriate! The new Gerald R. Ford class carriers also
have the added benefits of operating with almost 700 fewer crew members than the carriers
before, reduced standing and maintenance workload for the crew, and improved corrosion control
throughout the ship. The Gerald R. Ford will be the first aircraft
carrier designed with all electric utilities and will have better striking power than the
older carriers. The seas of our world are about to have some
shiny, new American ships on ‘em! We hope you enjoyed this comparison of The
United States’ Nimitz Class aircraft carriers vs Russia’s Admiral Kuznetsov. Do you think America really needs 10 aircraft
carriers at $4.5 billion each, or is Russia making the right decision by sticking to just
one? Let us know in the comments! And if you enjoy our videos and want to

We probably don't "need" $450 billion worth of Aircraft Carriers. But bitch this is USA. we do it cause others can't. I feel better at night knowing that if even one bomb was shot my way, the largest military the world has ever known would be there to, #1 stop it and #2 erase whoever was responsible. I love that we spend more on an aircraft carrier then some countries do on their whole defence budget…

The Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier is so bad it has to travel with ocean-going tugs because it constantly breaks down this is fact 1. this aircraft carriers is so bad it just recently had its entire Air Wing transferred to land operations to continue its flights sorties in Syria fact 2. It has been problematic since it was first launched in 1990 the boilers are constantly breaking down fact 3, the arresting cable system also bad inhibiting its ability to Launch and recover aircraft Fact 4. Internal systems constantly breaking down pipes freezing in the winter fact 5. This aircraft carrier has only seen one combat action that was Syria in 2016 where it lost two of its aircraft Mig 29k and an su-33 fact 6. They were planning to spend over 800 million US to upgrade and fix the issues but budget has been recent cut in half. this ship will be brought to Murmansk and spend the next 3 years being repaired. By the time it's repaired and put back into service the USA will have 11 nuclear powered super carriers with an additional 9 smaller flat top amphibious assault ships that carry vertical take-off Fighters as well as helicopters.

No provision has been made for Russian carrier replacement in the next 5 year plan. So no work will take place on a new carrier until 2026 at the earliest. The lead time on a new carrier would be at least 10 years. Probably considerably more. Nor is there any budget for the massive refit that would be required to keep it truly serviceable. I'm sure it won't be decommissioned so that it at least seems like it remains available for use. But after its poor performance in the Med last year I doubt that it will ever be sent into a war zone again.

Admiral Kuznetsov is not just an aircraft carrier but now it's called an "aircraft cruiser" the reason is that in the take off section (ski jump runway) if you see it from the top, you'll see 12 squares and these squares are anti-ship Missiles called the P 700 Granit or the SS-N-19 shipwreck

Ten attack(full sized) carriers is more than all the other navies of the world combined. That is way to many. Even the British policy in the early 20th century called for a number of battleships(analog to the carrier as the dominant ship type) equal to the next two largest navies combined. That would translate to about five, maybe six carriers for the USA. Economically, the other four or five carriers would be better replaced with smaller littoral ships such as Freedom and Independence classes, and larger escort ships such as Burke and Zumwalt DDs. Small rouge nations and groups seem to require more resources than major nation states.

Lol what an odd comparison. Russia got exactly ONE Carrier. For a good reason. It's an outdated weapon system, only usable against small countries to project power.
The right comparison would be Peter the Great against any US carrier… as THAT is a missile destroyer built to destroy preferably Carrier.

This is pretty funny for the simple reason that the Nimitz class does every thing a Air Craft carrier does better then the Admiral Kuznetsov. First off the video is not right in some of its facts hear are some corrects and other info.
    1) The Kuznetsov only cares 36 fixed wing aircraft while the Nimitiz is 60.
    2) The Kuznetsov never really obtained it designed speed and is actually is much slower due to poor under powered engine designs.
    3) The Kuznetsov can't lunch AWACs
    4) The Kuznetsov Can't lauch refualing planes
    5) The Kuznetsov can't launch combat air craft with full weapon and fuel load greatly reduces its combat effectiveness
    6) Because could not afford a task force to protect the the Kuznetsov, that had to pack it with missile further limiting it primary purpose.
    7) Russia does a very poor job with maintenance further reducing its combat effectiveness as many systems just don't work.

Now take in to account the poor status of Russians Navy air operations and you have a Carrier which is not even in the same ball game as the Nimitz class. Even the sister ship Varyag now owned and Run into engine issues in China. This is a lousy carrier.

Oil fired boilers with steam turbines are quite a big red flag; even on a civilian ship like the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2, Cunard gave up on the old steam systems, taking her out of service for a whole tourist season to replace her propulsion with proper diesel-electric propulsion. The fact that Kuznetsov is still using ancient Steam Turbines is… disastrously bad.

Bla bla bla.. comparing apples and oranges. Kuznetsov is heavy missile cruiser with flight deck. It was designed as defensive strongpoint. Primary objective was to deterr any carrier groups coming closer to the CCCP. It is heavily armed ship and even without any aircraft on the deck or other ships around it can send devastating havoc of multiple P700 missiles with 500kton nuclear warheads on any carrier group while defending itself and supporting ships with pretty huge anti-air defences against enemy planes and anti-ship missiles. It works even in worst possible weather conditions that completely prevent any airplane activity and there is no chance for any carrier group on this planet to survive such salvo of fully equipped Granits on black day. Even if just one or two from salvo pass the defences, the result is decisive elimination. Similar ships are Peter the Great, which have no deck for planes (only helipad), but has even more heavy missiles.
Planes on Kuznetsov are mainly used for AA or anti-sub patrols and light attack support. With ski-jump the payload of planes is limited. It was never meant to be floating base for heavy attack planes, although it proved to be somewhat usable in this role too while tested in Syria.

On the other side Nimitz is supercarrier and alone is completely helpless floating airfield which needs many surrounding ships and planes to do anything. It only can offer very limited AA self-defence that might be interesting 40 years ago, but is helpless against swarm of any modern sea skimming anti-ship missiles while being very tempting target for fast attack ships and submarines. Ship itself has no means of attack. Relies only on planes. Alone in bad weather it is just floating brick.

USA as No.1 wolrd terrorist nation is using carriers since WW2 to project force on weak countries that have no means of serious anti-ship defences. Then the big floating airfield comes handy as a base for attack planes. It was designed to carry large amount of planes which can use catapults to take-off even with heavy bomb/missile loads.

We have several carriers that are in mothballs and can be brought out in a matter of days. We out number all the carriers in the would put together 5 to one. And they would have to bring many of us back to reman them. Depending on the types of aircraft each carrier has up to 80 aircraft on them. And they also carry nuclear weapons and cruse missiles.

Why would Russia need more ships when her ground area itself covers 17% of the world lol

Nimitz class is for all of North America, not just the Navy!

I do not hate the Navy; I just chose the Army!

Admiral Kuznetsov has anti ship missiles. Russia has a defensive doctrine. Russia has Kirov-class battlecruisers to combat carrier strike groups.
    PS
Admiral Kuznetsov it's not an aircraft carrier

I usually tend to like Russian Military Equipment more. (Some stuff that they have look badass)
But overall, in Terms of AirCraft Carriers, The US is waaaaaaaay Advanced.
The US AirCraft Carriers will always stay the best.
No one will ever come close to that.
Edit: And dont get me wrong, The Russian Carrier is a Beautiful ship in my opinion but its just Outdated and needs to rest.
