What if NASA had the US Military’s Budget?

Space, the final frontier. Except, we don’t have cool spaceships because the US government has a bit of a thing for aircraft carriers, F35’s, and ships bristling with guns. The United States spends roughly 600 billion dollars per year on the military. Which is about 54% of the annual discretionary budget. By comparison, NASA only gets 18.5 billion dollars per year, or less than 0.5% of the national budget. Now, we are not going to get tied up in debating whether or not the US needs such a massive military. But, here are some quick facts in case you’re interested. The next biggest spender is China, at a 190 billion dollars per year. China has 500 of their type-99 tanks, which are outclassed by the M1 abrams. Of which, the US has 8700. The US has 10 aircraft carriers. The rest of the world combined has 10 smaller ones. There are 8,400 attack helicopters around the world. Of these, the united states owns 6,400. And those are just the vehicles. One single tomahawk missile costs around 1.5 million dollars. Then you have paychecks, fuel, ammunition, and all the rest. All those expenses add up to that whopping figure of 600 Billion dollars per year! The general public’s interest in space exploration has gradually dwindled since the space race. And now that there are no pesky communists trying to steal the moon from it’s rightful owners… We haven’t felt the need to spend significant resources on new missions! But what if, by some strange events, NASA ended up with the military’s budget? What could they do with it? For a little perspective… The entire cost of the Apollo Program was $136 billion in 2007 dollars. $136 billion over 13 years, Or just over $10billion dollars per year. Picture a clock representing $600 billion dollars. One minute on that clock is $10 billion dollars. One of the greatest scientific achievements in history fits into that tiny sliver of the US military budget. Pretty crazy. We won’t fuss about the little things like bureaucracy and research and development timelines in this video, we’ll just think about the cool stuff. First, NASA loves telescopes, probes and satellites. With a massive budget, the 10 or 20 years it would’ve taken to launch all of their projects could be cut down to just one or two years. We would see telescopes that’ll make Hubble seem like a Happy Meal toy. Infrastructure upgrades could be implemented to allow faster transmission of data from new missions. With all those resources in orbit, there would be new discoveries much more frequently, both on earth and in the cosmos. That could rekindle the public’s thirst for exploration. Possibly the smartest decision NASA could make would be to fund some smaller privately owned space exploration groups, like SpaceX. Which has an excellent track record of pushing the envelope. They could fund new space stations, reuseable space planes, asteroid mining operation and lunar bases Pushing further out into science fiction territory, once a lunar base is established, electromagnetic launchers on the moon could put large ships or space stations in lunar orbit, or a trajectory to Mars and beyond. That would definitely be the fastest way to colonize Mars, having a sort of halfway house on the moon to stage future missions. The International Space Station costed about $100 billion spread out over a decade, so think of the enormous, highly advanced stations that could be built with six times that amount per year! The kind of money and a massive base of operations in orbit could support a core of thousands of active astronauts, With a few hundred at a time exploring the solar system in different simultaneous missions. Serious planning could begin for manned mission into the Jovian System, Though, it might take several decades to become feasible, even with the massive budget. Then there’s this beast with NASA had been putting off for years. A Rotating Wheel Space Station. This design has been a staple in science fiction and popular speculation since the early 20th century. The rotation would provide artificial gravity, something prevalent in films like 2001 Space odyssey but not yet achieved in reality. A giant rotating wheel space station would could be a mobile base of operations near any planet we wanted to colonize and can be used as a safety net if something went wrong and the colony had to be temporarily evacuated. Or, if multiple stations were built, They could be place strategically around the solar system as rest stops for journeys into deep space. Speaking of colonizing planets, with a 600 billion dollar annual budget it would be feasible to colonize Mars in as little as 10 years. If the entire budget were spent on transporting people and supplies to Mars on shared rockets, in 10 years we can potentially see a populations of 40,000 people. Or, If NASA wanted to test the waters before sending a large population, they could spend the entire budget to send about 14 people per year, in their own individual rockets and provide each person with over an acre of Martian terrain to call their own. Then there the intriguing celestial bodies, currently out of reach to mankind. We could send robotic explorers to them all. Aircraft to Venus and Titan. Submarines to Europa. Imagine what discoveries could be made in the vast ocean beneath Europa’s icy surface. We could be just a few years away from uncovering extra-terrestrial life, if only NASA had the military’s pocket book. Of course, these are all hypothetical’s, but with that kind of funding to play with, it’s obvious that the scientific world would be absolutely inundated with mountains of new data and off world colonies could become a reality, easily within our lifetime and maybe even interstellar travel. Who knows, maybe some Russian hackers will decide that it’s time for another space race and switch around some zeros in the national budget. A man can only dream. 6. Kerbodynamic X Posted on July 18, 2019 at 6:22 am

You could think more, developing new technologies with a massive budget will be much more quickly. For example, nuclear fusion powered spaceships and even something runs on a Alcubierre Warp Drive (@ IXS Enterprise). We’ll go to other stars on manned missions in a few decades or so.

    Trump: hell no
Nasa: research says that mars is 99% oil
    Trump: 99% only? Heh
Nasa: we found out that all planet consists of at least 85% oil
    nasa: whoops
News: poverty rate increases as all budget of us was gone to nasa
    Nasa: happines noise

  16. Jackson Brooks Posted on August 1, 2019 at 2:53 am

Or we could just give nasa the military budget for 1 or so years mine an Astroid and then put all that money towards military. Win-Win

  17. scott-edwin kimble Posted on August 2, 2019 at 3:58 pm

I mean in a perfect Kumbaya world nations wouldn’t fight against each other and or wouldn’t have political differences or more importantly different government types and we could all just take all the weapons/vehicles etc and recycle the metals to be used in space craft

  18. Anak v Posted on August 3, 2019 at 2:59 pm

We should start a petition for nasa to have the military’s budget because America doesn’t need 600Billion for the army whereas nasa does

  19. yuusuf claahi Posted on August 4, 2019 at 1:08 pm

This 600 billion ,i will use to make propulsion engine, which can go faster than light ,when I got that type technology ,like warp drive ,then I will invest onother program , to harvest anti matter or to build far far away space station , which can human can live but only scientist and engineers ,these space station has anti matter reactor , every years ,I want to produce more killo anti matter and then I will use interstellar travel ,it will takes to reach alpha centuri star system four and half years ,I don't want terra form Mars and I want to explore far away Stars , we can colonies maximum hundred light years Stars ,when My ship stays in alpha centuri ,and then I will build another ship ,then send ,if we don't any habitable planet then we mined astroid then we will go other star ,like nomads , we are going every star like sea fearing culture , may itbtake million or thousands years , we spread our race to the universe, every day count ,every second counts and every life counts

The world will be in a vastly different place if America decided to flex its might through space exploration instead of military conquest. Also the mineral deposits in moon and Mars and strategic colony location is a better deal and investments than unstable oil sources and geopolitical mess and embarrassment.

  25. Johannes Almroth Posted on August 9, 2019 at 7:40 pm

  26. taeril1 Posted on August 10, 2019 at 1:41 pm

America will never go to space for serious, why to do it after all?

In space there are no innocent civilians to be carpet bombed, there is no vegetation and civilians hiding in it to be destroyed by orange c.
In space there are no people's whom America could plunder and steal their resources. Who would Americans torture in the space?

  27. Leon Müller Posted on August 10, 2019 at 11:40 pm

Who else still waiting for What if SpaceX had the US Governments budget

  28. MAKS6665 Posted on August 13, 2019 at 8:46 pm

Don’t agree – a lot of technology that was initiated for military purposes like GPS and the internet to resolve single point of failure have all been used for civilian use .
Also you are like a rich mans child who wonders why his life is so great and why his parents don’t give all their security funds away.
Also if the USA was to give up all its military then China and Russia would walk in and take your NASA spending. You think it’s far fetched we’ll ask the native Americans about what happened to their lands when they were weak militarily.
You think that’s far fetched old history well ask African governments now that are being taken over by Chinese and the French as they can provide no resistance.
Defence is the most important assets which when acquired leaves you free to think about wasting billions of dollars to float and spin around uninhabited rocks in the galaxies all just for the fun of it

  29. Dennis Posted on August 16, 2019 at 5:25 pm

We are the next generation and when all those old people who are currently ruling die we can shift the budget. Imagine if not only the US would do this, but the whole world.

  30. I'm Adopted Posted on August 16, 2019 at 7:52 pm

  32. Eduardo Rocha Posted on August 17, 2019 at 2:48 pm

what if the US military budget went from 600bi to 10bi, and the extra 590bi dollars were used for lowering taxes? research, development, jobs, technogy would go up the roof.

It saddens me how governments only seek their own limited interest not the entire mankind's ( that does mean we, developed nations are under obligation to aid weaker ones) but for humanity survival we have to develop space interstellar travel through spacecraft manifacturing corporations like SpaceX, NASA hence researchs related to space shall have even more funding

really i think if USA would for one day/week[worth of their funding] give US Army budget to NASA, nothing bad would really happen to military, i bet they allready have milions of dollars that they cant spend fast enought but this would REALLY boost the NASA – give some of money that was supposed to go to US Army to NASA to boost it. they would use this money for very long and make amazing things they couldnt do with today's funding

World should make U.N for space exploration and for at least a year nations of the world could spend at min. 25% of their money instead the military. Poor countrys (like in Africa) could send their very smart people but not pay anyting. And the rest are just deatails that need to be carefuly planed.

  58. Apollo //TepA Posted on September 2, 2019 at 6:12 pm

I’m not denying that military is important. Very important. And a force as the US, who are the biggest champion of the western world, obviously needs a big military. But this video really puts things into perspective. How much we could advance humanity, if The US have only have their military budget away. They would still have the best military in the world, and technological progress and space exploration would drastically be improved.

  59. Tanmay Arvind Posted on September 4, 2019 at 11:58 am

It's terrifying to see that from the United States budget –

$600,000,000,000 (600B) is being used to destroy our home planet.

And only $18B is being used to find a new one.

Lets not forget that the "discretionary" budget is small beans compared to the "mandatory" budget which is nearly 75% social programs. Country needs a military, it does not need a huge entitlement demographic. So if you are upset that NASA has a small budget blame a democrat, like Obama.

The problem is there is no profit in space exploration. There are no valuable minerals in space that we can even attempt to currently reach, only iron and dust. Theres just no way any space agency would be able to support itself without small give-away government funds.
