Why some soldiers carry the Ace of Spades

World War II and Vietnam War troops are often depicted as
having a playing card, usually the Ace of Spades,
strapped onto their helmets. But why? One urban legend suggests
that the Vietnamese feared the spade symbol. (laughing) They didn’t. The Ace of Spades is
also commonly thought of as the the death card and
the origins of this epitaph are very intriguing. Some sources report that
during the Vietnam War, U.S. planes would drop the Ace of Spades prior to carpet bombing. Eventually, just the dropping of the card was sufficient enough
to clear out an area. Damn. That is some efficient
war fighting right there. In Apocalypse Now, soldiers
threw the death card onto the bodies of
their enemies to, quote, “Let Charlie know who did this.” – [Man With Cigarette] Let
Charlie know who did this. – Psychological warfare
and symbology aside, there’s a primatic
reason the 101st Airborne had spades on their helmets. Unit identification. The practice of painting
a symbol onto a helmet was created in England just before D-Day. If a soldier jumped into Normandy and got separated from a larger portion of their unit, the easily
identifiable symbol would mark the soldier as being a part of a specific regiment. And a small dash at the 12, three, six and nine o’clock position
specified the battalion. Spades were designated for
the 506 Infantry Regiment. Hearts for the 502, diamonds for the 501st and clubs for the 327th Glider Infantry. Whatever that is. (laughs) No. Seriously, though. These guys flew into Normandy on gliders. There’s a story about it down below, check it out. The tick marks went
from 12 o’clock for HQ, three o’clock for First Battalion, six o’clock for Second Battalion and nine o’clock for Third Battalion. Today, the symbols are
still used as a callback to the 101st Airborne’s glory
days at the World War II. And how badass Apocalypse Now is. – I love the smell of
napalm in the morning. – The regiments are more commonly known as brigade combat teams and the symbols are each given as such. Clubs to the first team,
hearts to the second, spades to the now deactivated fourth and diamonds to the 101st
Combat Aviation Brigade. Now, the next time you
and your good buddies play Spades on watch,
think about all the spades that got dropped, so our elders didn’t have to man battle stations. Is there anything you’ve ever wondered about military uniforms? Leave a comment below. Maybe we’ll make a video about it.

It's a spade, a shovel. Based on older cards. The spade of a gravedigger to be exact. That's your connection to death. Pretty straightforward symbolism.

"Damn, that's some efficient war fighting" forgets that nothing about that war was efficient and was just America being loud pricks and literally counted progress by body count instead of land taken over and being loud af with your helicopters which let everyone know where you were and is why you guys got your ass handed to you. History is fun.

I spent Seven years in the US Army. I spent a year in Iraq. I am proud of my service to our country.
With that said, I have wondered about one thing:
Our military uniform is camo for a very good reason, because, it matches the color of our surroundings. It blends in with the color of the sand, trees or whatever. That's so we can hide from the enemy and he can't shoot us!
You should never advertise to someone that you are their enemy. That makes no sense!
The US military uniform now has a very easily recognizable, Red, White and Blue, US flag on it! Those are colors that don't blend in with your surroundings! You try to hide in the desert and you can't hide that flag!
The enemy can very easily see that flag! They will shoot what they can see. In this case, they will shoot at that flag!!!
In Vietnam, WWI, WWII and all other wars, the US was not stupid enough to put a US flag on the military uniform! Because, they didn't want to tell the enemy, "Hay, I'm American! Please shoot me!"
Why the hell are they putting a US flag on the US military uniform now?
Like I said, it is a target, you're advertising to the enemy that you're an American and their enemy, you can't hide that flag. If you tear it of your uniform, you get in trouble by your chain of command.
The US military is just getting "stupiderer and stupiderer"!!!
I did not like having that flag on my uniform at all, for those reasons! It could of got me killed in Iraq!
Since they never had a flag on the uniform before, why are they doing it now?
Please investigate that and make a video about it!
